Chances are you’ve watched “The Secret”, or at least heard about it. Released in 2006, the DVD is a series of interviews that basically claim: everything you want or need is achievable if you repeatedly think about it and maintain positive emotional states that attract desired outcomes.
For the record, I’m not a fan of the marketing gimmicks that The Secret employs to make “the law of attraction” sound like a historic revelation; a big mystery revealed. Similarly, I’m not a fan of many of its statements, such as “the universe rearranges itself”, “energy vibrates in our rhythm”, etc. I didn’t like that approach in 2007 when I first watched The Secret, and I still don’t like it today.
That being said, I’m a huge fan of the “secret” itself, i.e. “the law of attraction”. To me, this principle sums up what personal transformation is all about. The law of attraction says “what you focus on with your thoughts, feelings and action is what you achieve in your life”. I’ve experienced that personally on so many levels and I have friends and clients who had similar results after embracing the law of attraction as a lifestyle.
The law of attraction as a belief system is accurate, but not due to some arrangement of the cosmos (as The Secret would like you to believe). It’s not due to unseen fields of energy that are attracted to what we put out there. The law of attraction is actually a tangible phenomenon. It’s the logical outcome of a set of rules that can never fail.
So what’s the law of attraction really?
Well, in my opinion, the law of attraction is what happens when you focus all your energy on one thing. Play a video game long enough and you’ll get better at it … do nothing else but play that game and you’ll master it. The law of attraction is the power of full engagement manifesting itself in achievement of your goals. In other words, the law of attraction is “reaping what you sow”.
When you’re fully engaged in something at the mental, spiritual, emotional and physical levels, you are guaranteed some level of achievement. That level is affected by other factors, such as your talent, your circumstances, etc. However, there’s always positive outcome after dedicating yourself (your whole self) to a goal … and that’s the law of attraction.
We’ve all heard the saying “you can achieve anything you put your mind to”. Well, that’s partially true, because your mind is only part of the equation … what’s also required is your soul, your heart and your action. Once all four elements are aligned with your goals, you will certainly see results.
This concept manifests itself in everything. You want to change jobs, become an artist, learn an instrument, lose weight, etc. … the law of attraction will get you there. You just need to know why you want it, you need to believe in it, take action, commit to it and stay motivated, and you will then surely be rewarded. Full engagement is a powerful energy that never fails, and that’s what the law of attraction is all about.
Your performance in any field is directly related to the level of effort you invest. This requires you to push beyond your limits and aim higher than what you think you’re capable of. You need to stay positive and committed, while continuously engaging the four elements of your being: the mental, the spiritual, the emotional and the physical.
Here’s an example:
If you want to get in shape, you obviously need to be involved in some sort of physical activity and eat healthy. There are no ifs or buts about it. You do that, and the law of attraction dictates that the focus of your energy on your goal will reap results.
- Mentally you need to visualize your goal and be 100% convinced that you accept no other alternative. You have to be of the mindset that you will not miss a workout or eat anything outside your planned regimen. Mentally you need to be fully determined.
- Spiritually you have to believe in yourself and have the confidence that you will see this through. You need to maintain high spirits and allow nothing to discourage you. You need to rise above your daily habits and truly connect with the purpose of your own existence.
- Emotionally you need to stay happy and excited. You need to avoid negative self-talk and make sure to celebrate your successes after every workout and every healthy choice you make.
- Physically you need to push yourself harder than you’ve ever done before. You need to go beyond your normal limits, while making sure you’re getting enough sleep, nutrition and hydration.
It’s been said that “you get what you focus on” … so logically you need to focus on what you want.
The Secret is not a secret, and “the law of attraction” is not a mysterious principle that’s too complex to decipher. It’s not about the stars aligning for your destiny; it’s not about floating vibrations or the metaphysical. You attract what you focus on because when you focus on something you’re putting in the mental, spiritual, emotional and physical effort needed to get the job done.
If this makes you feel discouraged, don’t. Would you rather leave your success up to fate? Or would you rather know that success is based on your own effort and determination? Look at one aspect of your life that’s flourishing and you’ll find that the law of attraction is already in motion. It’s therefore wise to then reverse-engineer this process for your own advantage. Find a goal that you’d like to achieve and then align the four aspects of your energy to it. This is guaranteed to work.
